Death Takes A Holiday

  • 2 ounces Death’s Door White Whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce rich simple syrup
  • 1/4 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
  • 4 1/4-inch cucumber wheels, 1 reserved for garnish
  • 6-8 mint leaves, plus sprig for garnish
  • Small pinch of salt

In a cocktail shaker, firmly muddle cucumber wheels with small pinch of salt. Smack the mint and add it to the shaker along with the whiskey, lemon, sugar, and liqueur. Fill with ice and firmly shake for 20 seconds. Strain into ice filled collins glass.  Garnish with remaining cucumber wheel and mint sprig.

In this episode Grammy nominated musician and singer/songwriter Morgan Kibby joins Nick and GJ for a discussion about life and the music business.  Morgan is a member of the band M83 and she also has a solo project called White Sea.

First up is Updates.  GJ has a lot to say about his recent trip to China but he decides to hold off on talking about it so that we might have more time to speak with our guest.  Instead he wonders about the frequency with which men buy lingerie for their girlfriends and he tells us about Killswitch, an app that removes all traces of your ex from Facebook.  Nick gives us one final “fueef” update and he also tells about The Tweet Hereafter, a blog that compiles the final tweets of dead celebrities, and DeadSocial, a service that allows one to continue posting to social media sites after they die.

Then it’s Whatcha Drinkin’?!  This time, GJ has prepared a cocktail that has a “secret ingredient”!  “Death Takes a Holiday” is GJ’s twist on another cocktail and it features white whiskey (AKA corn liquor).  This potent, tangy sipper also includes elderflower liqueur, simple syrup, and fresh squeezed lemon juice which together add a sweet and sour twang to the surprisingly palatable unaged whiskey.

Next, Nick and GJ talk with Morgan about her career in the music business.  During the conversation she tells us about her bands M83 and White Sea; about touring the world and getting nominated for a Grammy; and about her personal philosophies regarding making music and money in the digital era.  Along the way we also hear about this stuff:

What happened to Flo’s ear?

  • GJ and The Rock are the next great tag team duo
  • The ubiquity of the bad Cosby impression
  • Flo Rida’s messed up ear

  • Everyone hates the word “panties”
  • The city of Scandinavia
  • The Unbearable Lightness of Being
